APE Films is proud to partner with Hip Hop legend Grandmaster Melle Mel on two new songs, "Black Lives Matter" and "All Lives Matter aka Fake". Recorded in support of the 2020 Civil Rights protests, they are being released to help insure that the issues raised remain front and center in the minds of all Americans as we look to do better moving forward into the new year.
Melle Mel is the main songwriter & lead vocalist for Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5, the group that gave Hip Hop its name, and first inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. His song "The Message" is considered the Greatest Record in Hip Hop History and was the first added to the US National Archive of Historic Recordings. It was also the first inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. GF&TF5 were among the first Hip Hop group to have artifacts on display at the Smithosnian Institution of United States National History.
On January 31, 2021, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five become the first Hip Hop group to win a lifetime Grammy.
"Black Lives Matter"
"All Lives Matter aka Fake"
As many as 35 million people participated in the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, making it the largest Civil Rights movement in American History. These protests are meaningless unless there is a commitment to follow through on having our elected leaders use their power to make real changes to how things are done starting 2021 and moving forward.
January 18, 2021 marks the 35th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Day becoming a U.S. National Holiday. Grandmaster Melle Mel performed with Whitney Houston and an All Star lineup of Hip Hop and R&B artists on the original song "King's Dream" song 35 years ago. He also performed with Steve Van Zant, Bob Dylan, Bono, Miles Davis & others as part of Artists United Against Apartheid on the song "Sun City". The record debuted at the United Nations and raised millions of dolars in support of the international campaign to end apartheid in South Africa.
In honor of the MLK Day 35th anniversary, and to help keep Civil Rights issues in the public eye moving forward into 2021, Mel's song "Black Lives Matter" will be given away as a free download, and will continue to be available for free download throughout February, Black History Month.
